Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla is an Indian astronaut and fighter pilot. He is one of the four astronauts currently undergoing training for India’s inaugural human space flight mission, “Gaganyaan”. The other three astronauts are Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Angad Prathap, and Group Captain Ajit Krishnan.

Shubhanshu is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA). He was commissioned into the IAF’s fighter stream on 17 June 2006 and was promoted to Wing Commander on 17 June 2019. 2
He has an experience of flying Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, Mig-29, Jaguar, Dornier, and An-32 aircrafts.
He has undergone training at Moscow’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in various aspects of spaceflight.
On 27 February 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the identities of four astronauts during his visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thumba, Kerala. All four astronauts, including Shubhanshu Shukla, are IAF test pilots from the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment in Bengaluru and they were shortlisted four years ago after rigorous rounds of evaluation. 3
