Javagal Srinath is a former Indian cricketer who played for the Indian national cricket team from 1991 to 2003. He played in 67 Test matches and 229 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, taking a total of 551 wickets across both formats. Srinath is regarded as one of India’s finest fast bowlers of all time. After retiring from cricket, Srinath is currently serving as an ICC match referee. 10
He was born on 31 August 1969 into a Kannadda-speaking Brahmin Hindu family to J.K. Chandrashekar and his wife Bhagyalakshmi at Javagal village of Hassan district in Karnataka. He has a brother, Javagal Srinivas, and 2 sisters, Srilakshmi and Srilatha.
His sister, Srilatha J C Pratap is married to Pratap Simha and the couple has 2 daughters, Namrata Simha and Sahana Simha.
He did his schooling at Marimallappa’s High School in Mysore and later did his Bachelor of Engineering degree in instrumentation from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysore. 11
He made his first-class cricket debut for Karnataka against Hyderabad in a Ranji Trophy match in 1989. He took a hat-trick in the first innings of his debut first-class match.
Javagal Srinath made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India on 18 October 1991 against Pakistan at Sharjah. He took one wicket and gave 33 runs in his 9 overs in that match, helping India to win the match by 60 runs. Wasim Akram was his first ODI wicket. 12
Srinath made his Test debut for India on 29 November 1991 against Australia in Brisbane. He took 3 wickets in the first innings of the match and Australian opener Geoff Marsh was his first test wicket. 13
He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1996. 14
Javagal Srinath’s first marriage was with Jyothsna in 1999 but it didn’t last long and they agreed to a mutual divorce in 2007.
He got married for the second time to journalist Madhavi Patravali on 13 December 2007 in Mysore in a low-profile wedding attended by only close family members and friends. Madhavi Patravali worked as a Copy-Editor at the Times of India. The couple has a son named Adhiesh. 15 16
He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2002 but was persuaded by the then captain, Sourav Ganguly, to play in ODIs until the ODI World Cup in 2003. He had a good world cup in which he took 16 wickets in 11 matches and helped the Indian team reach the finals. However, he lost his nerve in the final against Australia and ended up conceding 87 runs from his 10 overs as India lost by 125 runs. The Mysore Express retired from the game on 23 March 2003. 17 18
In 2002, Javagal Srinath’s career hit a controversial phase when he stayed away from Indian cricket for 5 months after the Indian national selectors asked him to take a break from cricket. An upset Srinath decided to play county cricket for Leicestershire in England during the same period when the Indian team was scheduled to tour the country for a four-match Test series. Srinath revealed that even the then-captain Sourav Ganguly tried to persuade him to join the England tour, but the right-arm pacer turned down the request. “I think before the World Cup, we had toured West Indies Without my knowledge, the selectors told me I had to take a break. Generally, we used to have a talk and then I used to volunteer saying ‘look I need a break’. But this time they just said ‘we’re giving you a break’ and that didn’t go well with me. Obviously, I was a little upset. I didn’t want my career to be played in the hands of anybody. I missed the England tour. Of course, Ganguly called me and said ‘look, you better be part of England tour’. I was upset and told him ‘No, I wouldn’t be.’ Now when I think of it, I should have played for India than playing County. Later when things cooled down, I decided to come back. I wanted to play the World Cup. Every World Cup is like a generation,” Srinath said. 19
He holds the record for bowling the fastest delivery ever by an Indian speedster. The Mysore Express clocked one of the deliveries at 157 kmph (98 mph) during India’s 1996/97 tour of South Africa. 20
He is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in ODIs with 315 wickets only behind Anil Kumble (334 wickets) and is the highest wicket-taker for India as a fast bowler in ODIs. 8
Since 2006, he has been serving as an ICC match referee. 14
