Death of Stephen Smith On 8 July 2015, 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a nursing student at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College was found dead in the middle of a rural road. Police determined it as a hit-and-run case with no suspects arrested but Stephen Smith’s mother Sandy Smith believed that her son was murdered. Stephen Smith was openly gay and was a high school classmate of Buster Murdaugh. Some speculated that Buster Murdaugh and Stephen Smith had some sort of relationship, but the case didn’t go anywhere. Stephen Smith’s father died three months after his son. 20
Death of Gloria Satterfield On 2 February 2018, the Murdaugh family’s longtime housekeeper Gloria Satterfield suffered a severe head injury after falling down the steps at the family’s Colleton County estate at 4147 Moselle Road, which is the same property where Maggie and Paul were shot and killed on 7 June 2021. She died weeks later on 26 February 2018 from her injuries. The death of Gloria Satterfield was never reported to the Hampton County coroner, no autopsy was performed, and the death certificate said that the death was by natural causes. Alex Murdaugh conspired with his banker friend Chad Westendorf and his attorney friend Cory Fleming to steal a $4.3-million insurance policy settlement meant for Satterfield’s heirs, Brian Harriott and Michael “Tony” Satterfield. Satterfield’s sons were ultimately able to recover more than $6.5 million during subsequent lawsuits. 21
Death of Mallory Beach On 24 February 2019, a Sea Hunt center console boat co-owned by Alex and Maggie slammed into a bridge in Beaufort County, South Carolina, which led to the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach. Paul Murdaugh was allegedly drunk driving the boat when it crashed, throwing his teenage friend Mallory Beach into the swirling current. Paul’s blood alcohol content was .286 percent – three times the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle but he was not given a field sobriety test, was not taken to jail for booking, nor was he ever handcuffed. This led to the speculation that the family used its influence to prevent police from charging Paul. Paul was charged with boating under the influence and faced up to 25 years in prison. He pleaded not guilty but was killed before his trial. 22
On 7 June 2021, Alex Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were found brutally shot to death at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, Colleton County, South Carolina. For 13 months, the double murder remained a mystery as no arrests were made, and finally, in July 2022, Alex Murdaugh was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Alex Murdaugh throughout the court proceedings maintained that he didn’t kill his wife & son and found the bodies after returning from a brief visit to his sick mother that night. 23
Alex’s father, Randolph Murdaugh III died just three days after Maggie and Paul’s double murder.
On 4 September 2021, Alex Murdaugh was allegedly shot in the head by someone in the truck while he was changing a tire on Salkehatchie Road in Yemassee, South Carolina. Alex was treated at a hospital for a superficial gunshot wound to the head and was released from the hospital soon after. The next day, he resigned from his law firm PMPED and entered rehab for a longtime addiction to opioids. Just one day before the shooting, his law firm partners accused him of stealing millions of dollars from its clients going back years and confronted him about the allegations. They ousted him from the firm that day. On 13 September 2021, he confessed to police to paying Curtis Edward Smith to shoot and kill him in an assisted suicide plot so that his remaining son Buster would receive a $10 million insurance payout. Curtis Smith is Alex’s former legal client, a distant cousin, and allegedly his drug dealer. Both Alex Murdaugh and Curtis Smith were arrested and charged over the incident. Murdaugh was then released on bond on the promise that he will enter rehab for his opioid addiction. Curtis Smith was later also accused of helping Alex Murdaugh with a drug and $2.4m money laundering ring. 24
On 12 July 2022, the South Carolina Supreme Court issued an official order disbarring Richard Alexander “Alex” Murdaugh from the practice of law in South Carolina. “Based on his admitted reprehensible misconduct, we hereby disbar respondent Richard Alexander Murdaugh from the practice of law in South Carolina,” the Supreme Court order said. 25
On 2 March 2023, After a six-week trial, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son by Judge Clifton Newman at Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, South Carolina. Although there was no direct evidence, including no eyewitnesses, the prosecution was successful in proving how Murdaugh had the motive, means, and opportunity to commit the murders. Motive Murdaugh was accused of extensive financial wrongdoing and stealing millions of dollars from his former clients and law firm. Prosecutors argued that he killed his wife Maggie and son Paul in a failed effort to gain sympathy and to distract and delay investigations into his growing financial problems Means 52-year-old Maggie Murdaugh was shot five times in the chest and head with an automatic rifle and 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh was shot twice – once in the head and once in the chest – with a shotgun. Both weapons were family weapons. Opportunity A video was filmed on Paul’s cellphone starting at 8:44 p.m. on 7 June 2021, less than five minutes before Paul and Maggie were shot dead. The video focuses on one of their dogs and appears to have been recorded at the kennels at their family home in Islandton, South Carolina. Three different voices can be heard in the background of the video, and family friends identified those voices as that of Paul, Maggie, and Alex Murdaugh. Murdaugh’s presence there contradicted his original claim to investigators that he was there that night. Murdaugh later admitted to lying, testifying during the trial that he misled law enforcement because of addiction-induced paranoia. 26
On 3 March 2023, Judge Clifton Newman sentenced Alex Murdaugh to two life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of his wife and son. 23 |
