Shirley Setia is a New Zealand-based singer & actress of indian origin. She was born on July 2, 1993 to Raj Setia and Firoza Setia in Daman, India. She also has a younger brother named Shane Setia.
Her father, Raj Setia is the owner of auckland based car dealership company named Raj Motors Limited. He has his roots in Hisar, Haryana.
Her mother, Firoza Setia belongs to Goa.
She was born in Daman but moved to New Zealand along with her family at the age of seven.
Shirley graduated with a Degree in Marketing and Information Systems from the University of Auckland.
She started working as a part-time radio jockey in Auckland with Radio Tarana hosting Showtime with Shirley on Sundays while still studying in high school.
In 2012, Shirley met singer Shreya Ghoshal who encouraged her to upload videos on YouTube so that she would be able to connect with Indian audiences even after living so far away.
Cover of Tum Hi Ho song from Aashiqui 2 was her first viral video on youtube, which she recorded spontaneously at 1 am in her pyjamas. This song earned her the nickname "Pyjama Popstar" by the New Zealand Herald and she also won a contest conducted by T-Series.
In 2015 when she was on vacation in Hyderabad, she put up a facebook post asking fans to meet her at GVK mall. Unexpectedly so many people turned up that Shirley was eventually kicked out of the mall by the security. This incident gave her inspiration to pursue her passion professionally and she moved to Mumbai in 2016.
In 2016, she was featured in the Forbes Magazine and was referred as "Bollywood's Next Big Singing Sensation". ¹
She made her singing debut in bollywood with song Disco Disco: A Gentleman (2017).
Shirley made her acting debut in Neeraj Udhwani directed Maska (2020) also starring Manisha Koirala, Javed Jaffrey, Nikita Dutta and Prit Kamani. It was released on Netflix on 27 March 2020. She also wrote the lyrics and sang the song "I Wanna Hang With You" in the movie.
In April 2022, she won "Celeb for Good Award" at the Femina Beautiful Indians Awards 2022.
As a child, she wanted to be an astronaut.
Shirley Setia will be making her big screen debut in Nikamma (2022) opposite Abhimanyu Dassani. Nikamma is scheduled to be released on 17 June 2022.
She will make her telugu film debut in Krishna Vrinda Vihari (2022) opposite Naga Shaurya.
