| Ramsarni Mehra Kapoor (25 December 1908 – 14 June 1972) was the wife of the legendary filmmaker and actor Prithviraj Kapoor and the mother of actors Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor. Her husband, Prithviraj Kapoor was considered one of the pioneers of the Indian film industry. | |

| Her brother, Jugal Kishore Mehra was also an actor. Jugal converted to Islam and changed his name to Ahmed Suleman before marrying yesteryear actress Anwari Begum. He also adopted Nasreen Agha, Anwari’s daughter from her first marriage to Pakistani actor-composer Rafiq Ghaznavi. Nasreen and Liaqat Gul Agha’s daughter Salma Agha and granddaughter Zahrah S Khan (aka Sasha Agha) are also actresses. | |
| Her first cousin, Vishwa Mehra was also an actor who appeared in small roles in several films, including the 1966 film “Teesri Kasam” in which he featured with Raj Kapoor in the song “Chalat Musafir”. Vishwa Mehra, fondly known as Mamaji, also handled production for R.K. Studios for films like Aag (1948), Barsaat (1949), and Awaara (1951). He passed away on 5th October 2022. 2 3 | |
| Ramsarni was aged 15 when she was married to the 17-year-old Prithviraj Kapoor in an arranged marriage in 1923. The couple had 6 children: 5 sons Raj Kapoor, Devi Kapoor, Nandi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, and a daughter Urmila Sial. 4 | |
| In 1931, Ramsarni tragically lost her second and third sons within a week. First, Devi Kapoor died of double pneumonia, and then Nandi Kapoor passed away a week later after he accidentally swallowed rat poison pills. 1 | |
| Both Ramsarni and her husband Prithviraj Kapoor were suffering from cancer and died about a fortnight apart. Prithviraj died on 29th May 1972, while Ramsarni passed away just 16 days after his death on 14th June 1972 at the age of 64. | |
