Facts
Mithali Raj is a former indian woman cricketer who played for india from 1999 to 2022. She played as a right-handed batter and was the captain of indian women cricket team between 2004 and 2022. She is the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket and is considered to be one of the greatest female cricketers ever.
Mithali Raj was born on December 3, 1982 in a Tamil family to Dorai Raj and Leela Raj in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She has an elder brother named Mithun Raj.
Her father, Dorai Raj was an Airman (Warrant Officer) in the Indian Air Force.
She attended Keyes High School for Girls in Hyderabad and completed intermediate from Kasturba Gandhi Junior College for Women in Secunderabad.
Mithali used to accompany her elder brother Mithun Raj to his cricket coaching class at St John's Academy and while other boys practiced, coach Jyoti Prasad would play cricket with the 6 year old Mithali. Jyoti Prasad recognized Mithali's natual cricketing talent and suggested her father to start concentrating on Mithali's cricket career and introduced him to Sampath Kumar, who was coach at National Institute of Sports.

Thereafter, Mithali started taking cricket coaching at Sampath Kumar's girl's cricket club "Sports Glory" where Sampath was so much impressed with her cricketing skills that he called her parents and said, "She is playing-for-the-country material. I, as a coach, I can take the challenge. But as parents, I need you guys also then only we can work on it… I will want her to play for the country when she’s 14 years. Sachin Tendulkar had a record. So why not we make this girl?".
At the age of just 9 years, Mithali became the youngest player to play for the state in the sub-juniors tournament.

In his response, Ramesh Powar accused her of 'blackmailing and pressurising coaches' by threatening to retire from the game of the cricket when asked to play down the batting order. Powar further said, "despite being a senior player in the team she puts in minimum inputs in team meetings. She could not understand & adapt to the team plan. She ignored her role and batted for own milestones. Lack of keeping the momentum going which was putting extra pressure on other batters."

Her relationship with the T20 team's captain Harmanpreet Kaur is also said to be strained by this episode. But the two have reconciled after reappointment of Ramesh Powar as Head Coach of the Indian women's cricket team in May 2021.
