Maria Yuryevna Sharapova is a former world No. 1 tennis player who played tennis on the WTA Tour from 2001 to 2020. Sharapova is one of the ten women and the only russian to achieve the career Grand Slam. She has won 5 grand slam titles - Australian Open (2008), French Open (2012, 2014), Wimbledon (2004) & US Open (2006).
In August 2005, she became world No. 1 in the WTA rankings. She was the first Russian player to become the best tennis player in the world.
She was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA for 21 weeks.
Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union to Yuri Sharapova and Yelena Sharapova. Her parents fled their home in Gomel, Belarus following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident as they were concerned about the regional effects of the 1986 nuclear accident.
Maria started hitting tennis balls when she was 4 years old. Her father, Yuri was the friend of Aleksandr Kafelnikov (Yevgeny Kafelnikov's father). Aleksandr gave Martina her first tennis racquet in 1991 and she started practicing regularly with her father at a local park.
She moved to the USA with her father in 1994 but her mother Yelena could not join them until two years later due to visa restrictions and finances. When Maria and her fatther moved to the US, they couldn't speak english and had only $700 in pocket.
She began training at Nick Bollettieri's Tennis Academy located in Bradenton, Florida, USA at the age of nine.
Although she is a United States resident since 1994, Sharapova still prefers Russian citizenship.
She has been a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador since February 2007.
In June 2011, she was named one of the "30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future" by Time Magazine.
Maria Sharapova won silver in women's singles at the 2012 London Olympics.
In 2016, Sharapova was tested positive for meldonium, a substance that had been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). As a resut WTA suspended Maria from playing tennis for two years.
On September 12, 2017 Sharapova's autobiography, "Unstoppable. My Life So Far" was published by Sarah Crichton Books.
Sharapova has a habit of grunting while hitting the ball and her loudest grunt was measured at 101.2 decibels during a match at Wimbledon in 2005.
She is a very close friends with fellow tennis player Maria Kirilenko.
