His family escaped the genocide in Cambodia, led by the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s. All of his grandmother’s side of the family who stayed there were murdered. His grandfather met a gangster who offered to take them out of Cambodia to Vietnam. However, when they arrived in Vietnam, they realized that the gangster was a human trafficker. They had transitioned from being slaves in one country to finding themselves enslaved in another. They ended up on a crowded fishing boat bound for Hong Kong and had very little oxygen, food, and water so people started dying during the journey. A British cargo ship, SS Sibonga tracked their SOS signal and came to their rescue. Out of several boats, only two boats carrying around a thousand people survived. Upon reaching the UK, they lived in a refugee camp in Sopley village near Christchurch for around two years. 4
In an interview with Eastern Eye, Leon Ung shared that his mixed origins often pose a challenge in securing lead roles. He said, “But often, (film) makers are looking for half-black and half-white (actors). If they want an Indian (performer), I again don’t fit in as I look ‘not Indian enough’. When it’s for Asian or Chinese characters, they find me ‘not Asian enough’. That’s why it’s really hard. It also shows there is still a problem of actual and fair representation.” 1
Leon Ung portrayed the childhood role of Bobby Deol in the Bollywood film Animal (2023).
He will be next seen as a Dancer in Disney’s “Snow White”, a musical adaptation of the classic children’s story. Directed by Marc Webb, the film stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. |
