On November 26, 2024, Aliya Fakhri was arrested for allegedly murdering her 35-year-old ex-boyfriend, Edward Jacobs, and his 33-year-old friend, Anastasia Ettienne. She is accused of deliberately setting fire to a two-story garage in Jamaica, Queens, where the victims were sleeping. The next day, a grand jury indicted her on multiple charges: four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder, and one count each of first-degree and second-degree arson. Fakhri has pleaded not guilty, but she could face a life sentence if convicted. According to the charges, on the morning of November 2, Fakhri allegedly arrived at the garage and yelled, “You are all going to die today” before setting the building on fire. Anastasia Ettienne reportedly tried to save Jacobs, who was sleeping on the second floor, but the fire spread rapidly, trapping both inside. Tragically, both victims died from severe burns and smoke inhalation.  Fakhri had been in a relationship with Jacobs, a plumber and father of 11-year-old twin boys and a 9-year-old son. Jacobs had ended their relationship about a year ago, but Aliya was reportedly trying to reconcile with him. Her mother, Marie Fakhri, expressed disbelief about the allegations, telling the New York Post: “I can’t believe she could kill someone. She’s a very caring person who tries to help everybody.” She also mentioned that Aliya struggled with opioid addiction following a dental mishap, which may have contributed to her erratic behavior. 3 | |
