Nutan Samarth Bahl is a legendary indian actress. She worked in more than 70 Hindi films in a career spanning nearly four decades. She is considered as one of the finest actress in Indian film history. Nutan was awarded a record-breaking 5 Filmfare awards for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress.
Nutan was born on June 4, 1936 to Kumarsen Samarth and Shobhna Samarth in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She was the eldest of four siblings.
She had two sisters, actress Tanuja Mukherjee and Chatura Samarth and a brother Jaideep Samarth.
Her parents separated when she was a small kid.
Nutan made her bollywood debut as a 14-year-old in Hamari Beti (1950) directed by her mother Shobhna Samarth.
In 1952, she was crowned Miss Mussorie. Nutan went on to participate in Miss India pageant and was the winner there as well.
She formed a popular on screen couple with Dev Anand. Both acted together in four movies: Paying Guest (1957), Baarish (1957), Manzil (1960) and Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963).
On October 11, 1959 she married Naval Lieutenant Commander Rajish Bahl. Their only son, Mohnish Bahl is also a film and television actor.
Her husband Rajnish Bahl directed her in the 1962 movie Soorat Aur Seerat.
Her husband Rajnish Bahl died from a fire accident in his apartment in 2004.
In 1974, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
Nutan found out that her mother Shobhna Samarth had been misappropriating her earnings, she filed a Civil suit and broke off all relationship with her mother. The relationship with her mother remained strained until Nutan was diagnosed with cancer.
Nutan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990. She died of cancer on February 21, 1991.
Naseebwala (1992) and Insaniyat (1994) were released after her death.
She was fond of hunting.
Her aunt, Nalini Jaywant (Shobhana's maternal cousin) was also a popular actress.
Actresses Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji are her nieces.
Her granddaughter Pranutan Bahl is also a Bollywood actress.
