Mahika Gaur is an English cricketer who plays as a left-arm seamer for the England cricket team. She has earlier played 19 WT20Is for the United Arab Emirates cricket team.
Mahika was born on 9 March 2006 to Anil Gaur and his wife Poonam Gaur in Reading, Berkshire, England. She also has an elder sister named Manasi Gaur, who is studying at the University of Bath. Her family has roots in Rajasthan, India. 1 2 3
Her father, Anil Gaur is 6 feet 4 inches tall and he also played for his university as a left-arm medium-pacer.
The crafty left-arm seamer was inspired to become a cricket player after watching the atmosphere at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Rajasthan Royals win over Delhi Daredevils in an IPL match in Jaipur in 2011. One day, Mahika’s father saw her practicing bowling in the garden and was surprised to see that she could roll her arm fully without chucking the ball. Her family shifted to Dubai when she was just eight years old, where she enrolled in the ICC Academy. There she got the opportunity to train with future UAE skipper Chaya Mughal. 4
Mahika Gaur made her international debut at the tender age of 12 for the United Arab Emirates in a WT20I match against Indonesia in Bangkok on 19 January 2019. 5
Gaur caught the attention of former wicketkeeper Warren Hegg and the cricket operations executive at Manchester Originals during a masterclass session at Dubai Expo 2020. During their conversation, Hegg found that Mahika had a British passport so she could play in England as a domestic player. 6
She narrowly missed out at the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held in February 2023 due to a calculation glitch. The Gujarat Giants franchise put in a late bid for her at the auction but they had to leave her out of the squad as they had already exhausted their quota of overseas players. 7
Mahika Gaur made her debut for England in a WT20I match against Sri Lanka at the age of 17 on 31 August 2023 and wrote her name in the history books by becoming the youngest player to represent two countries in international cricket, having played 19 WT20Is for UAE. In the rain-curtailed match, Gaur picked the wicket of the Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and helped her team win the match by 12 runs (D/L method). 8
She became the third Indian-origin player to play for the England women’s cricket team after Sonia Odedra and Isa Guha.
The 6.2ft left-arm seamer made her WODI debut for England against Sri Lanka on 9 September 2023. In her debut WODI match, Mahika delivered a match-winning performance by picking 3 wickets and was adjudged the Player of the Match. 9
