Suyash Sharma is an Indian cricketer who plays as a right-arm leg-break bowler and a right-handed batsman for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is a promising leg-spinner and has a deceptive googly. He is yet to play in the Ranji Trophy.
Suyash was born on 15 May 2003 in a middle-class family in the Bhajanpura area of East Delhi. He has an elder brother and an elder sister.
He was first spotted by the late Suresh Batra, who was Virat Kohli's coach during his initial years. Suresh Batra called former Delhi cricketer Kartar Nath in 2016 and told him about Suyash Sharma's talent. Kartar Nath called Suyash Sharma for trials where he saw an X-factor in him and was impressed with the amount of turn his googly generated. He was selected to play for Dena Bank in the DDCA League. 1
In 2019, he was close to getting selected for Delhi's Under-19 team but due to the unavailability of his birth certificate, he could not be considered. 1
After Dena Bank's merger with Bank of Baroda, Suyash started playing for the Madras Club in the DDCA league and for the Run-Star Club in open tournaments. 1
In May 2021, he lost his coach Suresh Batra during the second wave of Covid-19. Suyash's career was going nowhere and with Batra's death, his family also lost all hope. As he does not come from a financially well-off family, his mother wanted him to stop playing cricket but Kartar Nath convinced her mother to be patient and give him at least two more years as her son is a special talent. 2
Kartar recommended Suyash's name to Gursharan Singh, who was then part of the DDCA Cricket Advisory Committee. Gursharan Singh was impressed with Suyash's skills in the trials, particularly googlies and he was selected for the Delhi U-25 side. During his stint in Delhi Under-25, he caught the eyes of Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders scouts and was called for trials for both MI and KKR. 1
In 2022, his father was detected with cancer, and Mumbai Indians talent scout Rahul Sanghvi helped him to get his father treated in Mumbai. 3
In December 2022, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 20 lakh in the IPL mini-auction 2023. 4
Suyash's uncanny similarity to Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has also caught people's attention. He has long hair and wears a bandana just like Neeraj Chopra. 2
Suyash made his Indian Premier League debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders on 6 April 2023 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he took 3 wickets for 30 runs in his full quota of 4 overs and helped the KKR win the match by 81 runs. 5 |
