Stacey Abrams is an American Political Leader, Tax Attorney, Voting Rights Activist and a Bestselling Author. She is now one of the most prominent African-American female politicians in the United States.
Stacey Abrams was born on 9th December 1973 to Robert Abrams, a shipyard worker and his wife Carolyn Abrams, a college librarian in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. She and her five siblings grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi and were raised in Atlanta, Georgia.
Her siblings include Leslie Abrams Gardner (U.S. district judge), Dr. Jeanine Abrams McLean (Evolutionary and Computational biologist), Dr. Andrea Abrams (Anthropologist), Richard Abrams and Walter Abrams.
Stacey Abrams's sister Leslie Abrams Gardner, who is a Georgia District Judge married Jimmie Gardner, a man who spent 27 years in prison for rape and robberies he didn't commit. Jimmy Gardner was wrongly convicted of sexual assault and robbery case of May 1987 in which a mother and daughter were robbed, beaten, and the latter raped at their home in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. After being released from a prison in West Virginia in 2016, he became a motivational speaker to help others. He met Leslie Abrams at a gathering of black female judges while working alongside schools and prisons in Georgia and they fell in love. 16
Her parents became United Methodist ministers after pursuing graduate studies in Divinity at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and are now known as Reverend Carolyn and Reverend Robert Abrams. 17
She did her schooling from Avondale High School in Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies (political science, economics and sociology) from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar in Spelman College.
After that, she received a masters degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at in Austin, Texas, USA and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
She returned to Atlanta and worked as a tax attorney at the Sutherland Asbill & Brennan law firm in Atlanta, with a focus on tax-exempt organizations, healthcare and public finance.
In 1991, Stacey was chosen as valedictorian of her high school. She and her parents traveled by bus to the governor's mansion to attend the annual valedictorian's reception but where told to leave by the guard. Although they were eventually allowed to attend the reception but this experience stuck with the Abrams. Recalling about the incident, Stacey said, "I don't remember meeting the governor of Georgia or my fellow valedictorians...All I remember that day was a man at a gate, telling me I don't belong and i would never let someone make me feel out of place again." 18
Abrams led a protest in 1992 against the Rodney King verdict and co-founded a group called the Students for African American Empowerment.
In 2002, at age of 29 years, Abrams was appointed a deputy city attorney for the City of Atlanta.
She served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 11 years from 2007 to 2017, seven as Minority Leader from 2011 to 2017.
Abrams has received numerous awards including: John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award (2012), Friend of Labor Award (2018) from the Georgia AFL-CIO, and also received an A-ratings from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in recognition for her work as a public servant. 19
She founded Fair Fight Action in 2018 to address voter suppression.
She is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations in which she serves on the Subcommittee on Diversity and also served as a discussion leader, editor, and essay contributor as a Next Generation Fellow of the American Assembly on U.S. Global Policy and the Future of International Institutions. She is currently serving on the boards of several organizations including the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, the Marguerite Casey Foundation, the Center for American Progress, and the Women's National Basketball Players Association. 20
Inspired by her brother Walter Abrams's experience with mental illness and addiction, she has also called for criminal justice reform, expanded Medicaid, and a better understanding of mental illness.
In 2018, she was the Democratic Party's nominee for the governor of Georgia and became the first African-American woman to receive a major party's nomination for governor. Although, she lost the race by about 55,000 votes to the Republican candidate Brian Kemp, her candidacy in itself was historic.
In 2019, she launched Fair Count to ensure accuracy in the 2020 Census and to build long-term power in communities that have been historically undercounted 21 & the Southern Economic Advancement Project (SEAP), a public policy initiative to broaden economic power and build a more equitable future.22
Abrams was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in February 2021.
Abrams announced on December 1, 2021 that she would run again for governor of Georgia and was selected as Democratic Party's nominee unopposed on May 24, 2022. She will be facing Georgia's sitting governor Brian Kemp in the November 8, 2021 general election.

Abrams is the CEO of Sage Works Productions, Inc., a legal consulting firm that has represented clients including the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association. She served as a founder & COO of Insomnia Group, a development and advisory firm specializing in sourcing infrastructure projects and public-private partnerships from January 2007 to December 2010. In 2010, she co-founded Nourish, Inc., a beverage company for infants and toddlers. It was later rebranded as NOWaccount Network Corporation, a financial services and revenue acceleration company. NOW raised $9.5 million in Series A funding in 2021. 26 She co-founded The Family Room, Inc., a social app that combines connectivity and activity for young kids and the adults in their lives in March 2014.
