Ranjeet had even decided to quit the film industry and was about to fly to Germany to start off a chemical factory there. But he got offers for Mohan Segal's Sawan Bhadon (1970) and Sunil Dutt's Reshma Aur Shera (1971).
It was Sunil Dutt, who suggested him to use a Filmy name 'Ranjeet' instead of his real name 'Gopal Bedi'.
He made his acting debut in Mohan Segal's Sawan Bhadon (1970) as Rekha's brother Damu. Although he was signed for Rs. 1500 but was given a cheque of just Rs. 250 only. He kept that cheque as a memento for a long time.
Sunil Dutt recommended his name for Sharmeelee (1971), after liking his performance in Sawan Bhadon (1970) & Reshma Aur Shera (1971). He rose to fame as a villain after starring in 'Sharmeelee' as baddie Kundan.
He has an infamous record for having committed a record 350 rapes onscreen.
Ranjeet was offered the role of Gabbar Singh in 'Sholay' after Danny Denzongpa but he turned it down. The role eventually went to late Amjad Khan and the rest is history.
He got married to a girl named Pushpa after being in a live-in relationship with her for 12 years. Ranjeet revealed, "We were friends since the time I was a nobody. I had decided that if I ever got married, it would be with her. Though I had given her everything and she was introduced as the lady of the house, as a woman it must have been hell for her to be called 'Ranjeet's mistress'. Also, I'm not made in the 'use and throw' mould. So I married her despite having several girls chasing me and gave her the status of a wife." However within a year and a half, walked out on Ranjeet and even aborted their baby. "Some girls poisoned her mind against me. She knew me for 12 years. What worse could I have been than what she already knew? People divorce after 12 years, but I chose to marry her after 12 years of living in.", Ranjeet said.

Ranjeet had selected Aloka as a leading lady in his directorial debut Kaaranama (1990) and this brought them closer and they fell in love. The film was delayed and Aloka's role was eventually done by Kimi Katkar. Ranjeet revealed about this in an interview, "How I met her was that I was going to cast her in my film, but my parents liked her. she was modern yet homely, could speak English as well as Punjabi. what else could I want. My younger brother and sister were married and my parents were really keen on me settling down. Par un dino ke Ranjeet ko kaun apni beti deta (Who'd have married their daughter to the then Ranjeet). Luckily, my in-laws did; I insisted on an intimate wedding with only immediate family present." However, some of Nazneen's relatives were livid when they found out that she had been married to Ranjeet and even suggested to her mother that she should have poisoned or drowned her daughter instead of letting her marry Ranjeet. "Later, one of my wife's relatives was livid when she found out she had been married to me. They told my mother-in-law that she should've instead poisoned or drowned her daughter than letting her marry me. They tried to instigate them saying that they should check their daughter's body for marks of violence because surely I got drunk and beat her up every evening. My in-laws shot back that if anyone would get hit in the relationship, it would be Ranjeet," he added. 2
Ranjeet and Nazneen got married on April 30, 1986 and she changed her name to Aloka Bedi after the marriage. The couple was blessed with a daughter Divyanka Bedi and a son Chiranjeev Bedi.
