Anil Kumble is a former Indian cricketer who represented india in Test and One Day International cricket over an international career of 18 years. Kumble did his primary education for Holy Saint English School, Koramangala, Bengaluru and completed his schooling from National High School, Basavanagudi, Bengaluru.
He graduated with B.E. (Mechanical Engineering) from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru.
Anil Kumble married Chethana Ramatheertha on July 1, 1999. He also adopted Aaruni, Chethana's daughter from her earlier marriage to Kumar V. Jahgirdar. He has a son Mayas Kumble & a daughter Svasti Kumble with Chethana Ramatheertha. Chethana is two years older than Anil Kumble.
In 2012, Kumar Jahgirdar filed a police complaint against Anil Kumble for allegedly forging the signature of Jahgirdar to obtain passport for Aaruni. Kumble had explained that he has affixed his signature in the column of parent/guardian and not as Aaruni's father. Jahgirdar later withdrew his petition.
He is considered one of the best ever spin bowlers in the Test cricket history. He took 619 wickets in Test cricket and is 4th highest wicket taker of all time.
Kumble initially began his career as a medium pacer.
Anil joined a club called "Young Cricketers" at the age of 13. He was not a big turner of the ball, but he relied mainly on pace, bounce, and accuracy.
In 1995, he was awarded Arjuna award by the Government of India.
He was one of the "Wisden Cricketers of the Year" in 1996.
In February 1999, Kumble dismissed all ten batsmen in a Test match innings against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, now known as Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He was the second cricketer after England's Jim Laker to achieve the feat.
Following this achievement a traffic circle in Bengaluru was named after Anil Kumble and he was also gifted a car with customized license plate: KA-10-N-10.
In a Test match against West Indies in 2002, he bowled with a broken jaw for 14 consecutive overs and even dismissed Brian Lara in that match.
He did a Cameo in the movie Meerabai Not Out (2004).
In 2005, Kumble was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour.
In November 2007, Anil Kumble was appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team in Tests.
He retired from international cricket in November 2008 after playing for 18 years.
On January 1, 2009, he was appointed to the athlete's commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
On November 21, 2010, Kumble was elected as The President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
He published a book called "Wide Angle: Candid Moments From My Playing Days" in May 2011.
On October 12, 2012, he was appointed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s cricket committee.
In February 2015, he became the fourth Indian cricketer to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame.
On March 12, 2019, he was again appointed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s cricket committee.
In October 2019, Kumble was appointed as the Head Coach and the Director of Cricket Operations for Kings XI Punjab.
On June 24, 2016 he was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team by BCCI but he stepped down as the head coach on June 20, 2017 due to untenable differences with the captain, Virat Kohli. His tenure was of less than 1 year.
He is nicknamed "Jumbo" because his deliveries were considered as fast as a jumbo jet for a spinner and also because his feet are quite big.
Kumble holds the record for the maximum number of caught and bowled dismissals in tests, 25.
He is the only Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in a test innings 35 times.
Anil Kumble was adjudged Man of the Series on four occasions and Man of the Match 10 times in Test Matches.
In One-Day Internationals (ODIs), he won the Man of the Match award on six occasions and once he was named Man of the Series.
He published a book called "Wide Angle: Candid Moments From My Playing Days" in May 2011.
