Born on February 10, 1973, in New Delhi, India, Aarti hails from a Bania Hindu family. She completed her schooling at Presentation Convent High School in New Delhi and later graduated from Hansraj College, Delhi University. In 1994, she moved from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue a course in film and video production at the Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai. Although her father was initially against her career choice, he reluctantly agreed after she threatened to run away if not allowed to pursue her passion. 1 2

Aarti gained experience by interning with veteran editors Bardroy Baretto and Shyam Ramanna. 2
She met Anurag Kashyap in college, and the two fell in love while working together. They had a live-in relationship and welcomed their daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, in 2001. The couple married in 2003 but separated four years later, with their divorce finalized in 2009. Despite their separation, Aarti and Anurag have maintained a warm and cordial relationship and continued working together even after their divorce. 3

At one point, Aarti asked Anurag to leave their home due to his heavy drinking when their daughter was around four years old. 4
Aarti began her career as an editor in 1999 with the short thriller Last Train to Mahakali, written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The short film, starring Kay Kay Menon and Nivedita Bhattacharya, was made for Star Plus’s television show Star Bestsellers. 5
She then worked as an editor on Anurag Kashyap’s unreleased movie Paanch in 2003 and followed it up with his crime film Black Friday, for which she earned a Star Screen nomination in 2008. She continued to collaborate with Anurag on several other films, including No Smoking (2007), Dev.D (2009), Gulaal (2009), Ugly (2013), Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016), Mukkabaaz (2017), Manmarziyaan (2018), and Dobaaraa (2022).
Aarti has also edited several films by Imtiaz Ali, including Jab We Met (2007), Love Aaj Kal (2009), Rockstar (2011), Highway (2014), Tamasha (2015), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), Love Aaj Kal (2020), and Amar Singh Chamkila (2024).
Additionally, she has worked on two Pakistani films, Cake (2018) and Wakhri (2024).
In September 2020, Aarti publicly supported her ex-husband Anurag Kashyap after actress Payal Ghosh accused him of sexual harassment. Aarti posted on Instagram, calling Anurag a “Rockstar” and praised him for creating a safe work environment for his female colleagues. She also criticized Ghosh’s allegations, calling them the “cheapest stunt” she had seen. 6
Aarti’s mother, Krishna Bajaj, passed away on April 29, 2021. 7
Her daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, got engaged to her long-time boyfriend, Shane Gregoire, on May 20, 2023, in Bali, followed by a grand engagement ceremony in Mumbai. 8

Aarti won the Best Editor award for the web series Jubilee at the Filmfare OTT Awards 2023.
